Frequently Asked Questions
Major intakes occur in the following year levels:
- Early Learning Centre (3 year old and 4 year old)
- Year 5
- Year 7
- Year 9
- Boarding: Years 7-12
In intake years, we create the equivalent of one or two new classes depending on the year level. Intake at other year levels is dependent on availability and at the Principal’s discretion.
The enrolment phase is activated approximately two years prior to commencement at Toorak College.
Please contact the Enrolments Office directly to discuss your child’s intake at Toorak College.
At Toorak College, we use ‘date of application’ as our main criterion in assessing applications. As a general rule, the earlier an application is received, the higher chance it has of being successful. Places can sometimes become available during an academic year. We look to fill these places as and when they become available, while still honouring the waitlist.
We accept applications throughout the year for all year levels. Sometimes places become available during the academic year, giving the Enrolments Office the opportunity to discuss enrolment possibilities with families who may be looking to apply within short timeframes.
As an open entry and non-selective school, we do not keep any positions vacant or on hold for possible overseas/interstate relocations. This is to ensure we give fair opportunity to all families who are interested in Toorak College, regardless of geographical location. However, if your family is relocating, please contact the Enrolments Office to discuss possible places in the year levels you are interested in. We sometimes have places available in various year levels that may not have been filled.
Toorak College meets with all families and students before they commence their schooling. Part of the interview process is to discuss whether there are any additional learning needs to be considered. Having additional learning needs does not exclude a student from entering Toorak College. However, the School needs to ensure that there are appropriate resources available to provide the level of support required. We ask for as much information as possible during the enrolment process to ensure that all relevant considerations are made, and that the School and the family have the same understanding and expectations.
The interviews are an opportunity for the School to meet with potential new students and families to discuss their child’s schooling, interests and hobbies, and to get a better understanding of any needs that may be relevant to their education or development. Each interview is an informal conversation, as well as a great opportunity for parents to ask questions about the School’s curriculum and programs.
Recent school reports and any other information or reports must be submitted to the Enrolment Office for an interview to take place.
The child must be present at the interview with at least one parent/guardian.
Waitlist interviews can also take place when we believe places may shortly become available. We conduct these to help families move through the process quickly if last-minute places do become available.
A formal offer is made and families are required to complete the Confirmation of Enrolment and the Enrolment Agreement paperwork and pay a non-refundable Endowment Fee of $1400 to secure the child’s place for the first child, or $200 for each subsequent child (refer to Enrolment Process for more information).
Families are given two weeks to respond to an offer. If no response has been received by this time, the offer may be cancelled and your child will be placed back on a future waitlist. This two week period may be adjusted during Term 4 (two to three days) to reflect a quicker enrolment process that is required to confirm class placements for the following year.
Offers of enrolment only apply to the specified year level and year of entry. If you wish to change your child’s year/year level of entry after you have received an offer, you must notify the Enrolments Office in writing. In this case, your child’s offer of enrolment for the previous year/year level will be cancelled, and your child’s name will be placed on a waitlist for the newly requested year/year level.
Toorak College cannot guarantee a place will be available in any future years after an offer has been declined. This also applies if a family accepts an offer, then wishes to change the entry year level/year at a later date. For families who have accepted an offer, the Confirmation of Enrolment Fee is non-refundable. However, if a place is offered to the child in the future, the Confirmation of Enrolment Fee will not be payable again. Toorak College does not ‘defer’ offers.
The enrolment process can vary from a prompt confirmation to a number of weeks or months. It can be difficult to predict how long the process will take for each individual year level.
No. If Toorak College is unable to make a formal offer to a student, we will discuss options with families.
